Weatherization Program Grantees To Face More Oversight

Washington, Jan. 8 – Weatherization Assistance Program grantees nationwide should expect to see more onsite inspections from Department of Energy officials as a result of extensive internal control deficiencies found in program management in Illinois.

The DOE Office of Inspector General recently issued a management alert after reviewing the Illinois Home Weatherization Assistance Program. The program received $242 million under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to weatherize about 27,000 homes. It said the agency had not conducted regular monitoring visits at the state level; Illinois officials had not complied with DOE’s requirements for inspecting weatherization work done by local agencies; and a weatherization inspection at a local agency failed to detect substandard installation.
