Fire Station Construction Applications Now Being Accepted

Washington, June 10 – Local fire departments looking for funds to renovate their existing fire stations or construct totally new ones have to act quickly to get their share of $210 million made available under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Late last month the Department of Homeland Security released guidance and announced a July 10 application deadline for the Fire Station Construction Grant Program, and the application window is now open. Funds are to be used for brick and mortar projects that will enhance response capabilities and protect communities from fire-related hazards. The Federal Emergency Management Agency is administering the program for DHS and anticipates that it will be very competitive. Initial estimates from DHS indicate that up to 10,000 applications could be received for grants totaling some $30 billion. Of those applications, about 100 are expected to be selected.
