Civil Rights Violation Costs BART $70 Million in TIGER Funding
The Federal Transit Administration recently rejected the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) District's application for $70 million in Recovery Act funding to build a rail connection between Oakland International Airport and the current BART system.
BART's application seemed to dovetail perfectly with the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant program's purpose of funding innovative transportation projects that unite multiple modes of transportation while generating construction jobs. But because BART did not comply with an FTA requirement regarding the Civil Rights Act, the agency ultimately denied the California transit authority's funding request.
