HUD Awards $2 Billion to Revitalize Neighborhoods, Create Affordable Housing
Washington, Jan. 25 – The Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded $2 billion in Recovery Act funding through the Neighborhood Stabilization Program in order to help revive impoverished neighborhoods.
HUD Quietly Issues ARRA Guidance
Washington, Oct. 19 – The Department of Housing and Urban Development recently issued two guidance documents for public housing authorities on implementing provisions of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. However, grantees may have missed those issuances, as neither appears on the department’s Recovery Act Web page.

Washington, May 19 — As we told you in your first subscriber-only special report, the Recovery Act includes more than $2 billion for owners of public housing multifamily properties to carry out "green retrofits" of existing units in order to improve energy efficiency, protect tenant health or otherwise benefit the environment. And now, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has released complete details on how the new Green Retrofit Program (GRP) grants and loans will operate.

HUD Eases Some Buy American Restrictions
Washington, Nov. 2 – The Department of Housing and Urban Development is making it a little easier for recipients of Recovery Act Community Development Block Grant and Neighborhood Stabilization Program 2 funding to obtain waivers from the initiative’s Buy American provisions.
Indian Housing Block Grants
The economic stimulus plan currently being crafted by Congress would contain a funding boost for the Indian Housing Block Grant, which is administered by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Under this program, all federally recognized Indian tribes are eligible for formula grants to support public housing on tribal lands.
Direct and Guaranteed Loans to Finance Rural Housing
The economic stimulus legislation currently being debated by Congress contains signficant funding for both Section 502 direct loans and Section 502 loan guarantees. The two programs, administered by the Rural Housing Service, provide low-interest loans or loan guarantees to help low- and very low-income families living in rural areas finance home purchases.
The Public Housing Capital Fund
The economic stimulus package currently being debated by Congress would add billions of dollars to the Department of Housing and Urban Development's Public Housing Capital Assistance Fund. For years, HUD has cited major deteriorations to its housing stock and estimated that major increases to the Capital Fund were needed to restore the nation's public housing units.
Grants for Section 202 and Section 811 Supportive Housing
The housing component of the economic stimulus package includes considerable funding for Section 202 grants for supportive housing for the elderly, and Section 811 grants for supportive housing for persons with disabilities.
